Galp Nears Commissioning of Green Hydrogen Plant in Sines | Mariner News
Galp is making significant strides towards the commissioning of its innovative green hydrogen plant in Sines, Portugal. This landmark project, nearing completion with the successful installation of all electrolysis modules, represents a pivotal moment for the future of sustainable energy and the decarbonization of industrial processes. Positioned to be Europe’s largest facility of its kind, the Sines plant underscores Galp’s commitment to pioneering low-carbon fuel solutions.
Boosting Sustainable Fuel Production
The energy producer has completed installing ten 10 MW electrolysis modules, forming a robust 100 MW production unit at its Sines Refinery. Expected to commence operations in the latter half of this year, this substantial infrastructure investment is projected to produce up to 15,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually. This output is critical, replacing around 20% of the grey hydrogen currently used at the refinery, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Accelerating Shipping Decarbonization
This initiative supports the future supply of low-carbon fuels for vital sectors like aviation and especially the shipping industry. Green hydrogen plays a transformative role as a feedstock for various sustainable marine fuels; for instance, combining it with captured CO2 enables the creation of e-methanol. Galp’s project is therefore a crucial step towards helping the global shipping sector achieve its ambitious decarbonization goals, offering tangible solutions for cleaner maritime operations and a greener future.
