Fleetzero, Glosten collaborate on hybrid electric vessel project

Fleetzero, a developer of modular propulsion systems for hybrid and electric maritime vessels, has partnered with Glosten, a firm specialising in naval architecture and marine engineering, to create what is claimed to be the longest-range hybrid electric vessel globally.

This partnership aims to advance zero-emission shipping and enhance the application of electric propulsion in the commercial maritime sector.

The collaboration follows Glosten’s involvement with Fleetzero in retrofitting a Lightering Support Vessel owned by AET.

This vessel is currently being equipped with a plug-in hybrid-electric propulsion system, which will enable it to operate primarily on battery power once the retrofit is finalised.

Fleetzero CEO Steven Henderson said: “This vessel will be a major milestone—not just for us, but for the entire industry.

“Partnering with Glosten allows us to showcase how our propulsion technology can enable economical, cleaner, and more efficient operations, while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in shipping.”

Design work for the new vessel is already in progress, with Fleetzero and Glosten set to move into detailed engineering phases in the upcoming months. Construction is projected to commence in mid-2026.

Upon completion, the vessel is expected to serve as a benchmark for long-range hybrid-electric propulsion in the maritime industry.

Glosten CEO and president Morgan Fanber said: “We’re excited to support Fleetzero in transforming this vessel.

“It’s a bold move toward the next generation of marine technology, and exactly the kind of advancement we’re proud to support.”

Fleetzero operates from Houston, Texas, and integrates modular hull construction with customised hybrid-electric propulsion systems and advanced autonomous navigation.

Glosten offers a range of consulting services, including expertise in naval architecture and engineering across various vessel types, including research ships, tugs, and ferries.
