Energos Force FSRU Returns to Germany for Stade Terminal | Mariner News
Germany has received its fourth Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), the Energos Force (94,361 dwt), at the Stade-Bützfleth industrial port, near Hamburg. Its arrival on September 15 signifies a critical step in increasing Germany’s LNG import capacity, managed by the state-owned Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET).
The FSRU’s deployment is part of Germany’s strategic program, initiated in 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to replace Russian gas supplies and align with the EU’s eventual total ban on Russian gas imports.
Once commissioned by November, the Energos Force is expected to provide an injection capacity of up to 3.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year by 2027. This substantial addition will establish Stade as a vital component of Germany’s long-term energy security.
“As promised, the return of the regasification vessel to the Stade jetty marks the start of preparations for the terminal’s commissioning,” stated Dr. Peter Röttgen, CEO of DET. He acknowledged the complexities involved, noting the extensive technical and safety assessments, along with the construction of the jetty and onshore terminal, which is still being completed.
A notable commercial implication of the FSRU’s arrival is its previous employment. While the Stade facility was under development, DET strategically sub-chartered the Energos Force for deployment in Jordan. This temporary redeployment highlights the operational flexibility and market responsiveness of FSRU assets, enabling their productive utilization during the extended lead times required for permanent onshore infrastructure development. Its return now shifts significant regasification capacity from a temporary foreign market back to its intended long-term strategic role in Germany.
With the FSRU now docked, the focus shifts to completing its commissioning, alongside the final stages of the onshore terminal infrastructure, to bring the vital import capacity online.
