El Salvador Navy’s Record 6.6-Tonne Cocaine Bust | Mariner News
Historic Maritime Drug Seizure
El Salvador’s Navy has successfully executed a historic operation, seizing a staggering 6.6-tonne cocaine bust in international waters. This unprecedented drug interdiction marks the largest such maritime enforcement action in the nation’s history, significantly impacting global drug trafficking networks. The monumental haul, valued at approximately $165 million, underscores the persistent challenges of illicit trade and the resolve of El Salvador’s naval forces to combat it.
Offshore Interception Details
The multi-tonne seizure took place about 380 nautical miles southwest of El Salvador’s shores, far beyond its exclusive economic zone. Naval forces intercepted the “FMS Eagle,” an aging workboat, where 330 packages of cocaine were ingeniously concealed within its ballast tanks. Divers were essential in recovering the vast quantity of narcotics, highlighting the complexity of the operation. Ten crew members, all from Central and South America, were detained in connection with this significant offshore seizure.
El Salvador’s Anti-Drug Efforts
President Nayib Bukele lauded the Fuerza Naval de El Salvador for this critical anti-drug success, aligning with his government’s tough-on-crime policies. This high-profile operation not only disrupts a major drug trafficking route but also reinforces El Salvador’s commitment to international cooperation against organized crime. The captured vessel is slated for government seizure, sending a clear message to drug cartels about the increasing risks of maritime smuggling.
