Trust Score: 55

The global maritime industry is rapidly embracing greener technologies, with a significant majority of new dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers now on order. A recent report from the World Shipping Council (WSC) reveals that an astounding 74% of vessels in the combined orderbook for these two crucial segments are specified with dual-fuel propulsion. This surge underscores a substantial shift towards more sustainable maritime operations, reflecting a clear commitment to environmental stewardship and decarbonization efforts.

Driving Sustainable Shipping Solutions

This comprehensive data, updated from WSC’s dual-fuel fleet dashboard, highlights the swift transformation within the shipping sector. In total, 726 dual-fuel vessels are currently on order, signaling a robust pipeline for future eco-friendly shipping. Major players like AP Moller Maersk and CMA CGM are actively expanding their fleets, investing heavily in these advanced vessels to meet evolving environmental regulations and industry demands for cleaner operations.

Rapid Growth in Dual-Fuel Fleets

Beyond new orders, the operational dual-fuel fleet is also experiencing remarkable expansion. As of December 2025, 400 dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers were already navigating the world’s oceans, a sharp increase from 218 in 2024. This represents a 28% year-on-year growth in the combined delivered and ordered fleet, now totaling 1,126 vessels. The WSC notes this significant trend is backed by over $150 billion in investments from the liner shipping industry, dedicated to facilitating the vital fuel transition and fostering a more sustainable maritime future.
