DHL to Double Heavy-Weight Express Shipments | Mariner News
DHL aims to significantly expand its heavy-weight express business, targeting a doubling of shipments after scaling back the segment in 2018. The strategic pivot, announced by CEO John Pearson at a capital markets day on September 17, 2026, positions this service as a “growth diamond” within DHL’s Express division.
The renewed focus comes as the heavy-weight express product, relaunched in its current form in May, posted significant growth during the second quarter. DHL sees considerable potential in better utilizing its existing air network capacity to accommodate the anticipated increase in larger, time-sensitive consignments.
This strategic push from a logistics giant like DHL signals an intensification of competition in the specialized express and air cargo markets. Analysts have previously noted a new front of competition emerging between DHL and DSV, suggesting that this re-emphasis on heavy-weight shipments could further sharpen competitive dynamics among global integrators and freight forwarders.
The move implies a strategic allocation of resources towards high-value, often urgent cargo that demands dedicated air freight solutions, leveraging efficient utilization of existing infrastructure rather than relying solely on market expansion. This could influence cargo flow patterns and capacity demands at key air hubs, as DHL seeks to maximize returns from its global air network.
