DHL & CMA CGM Biofuel Deal Drives Shipping Decarbonization | Mariner News
Logistics leader DHL Global Forwarding and container giant CMA CGM have struck a significant deal to consume almost 9,000 metric tons of second-generation biofuels. This landmark agreement aims to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ocean freight, marking a crucial step towards sustainable shipping and the decarbonization of global supply chains.
Driving Sustainable Marine Fuel Adoption
Under this collaboration, 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel will be utilized across CMA CGM’s vessels. This substantial commitment is projected to save an estimated 25,000 metric tons of GHG emissions, with these savings attributed to cargo transported via DHL’s GoGreen Plus service. CMA CGM will physically bunker the advanced biofuel, aligning emission reductions with DHL’s innovative Book & Claim approach, ensuring tangible environmental impact for their shared customers.
Advancing Low-Carbon Supply Chains
Casper Ellerbaek, head of global ocean freight at DHL Global Forwarding, emphasized this partnership as a key milestone in their mission to establish low-carbon supply chains. By embracing sustainable marine fuels, both companies are helping customers achieve ambitious climate goals and driving genuine progress in industry-wide decarbonization. CMA CGM has already demonstrated its commitment to greener logistics, having cut the carbon intensity of its shipping activities by 57% since 2008.
This joint initiative underscores the maritime industry’s growing focus on environmental stewardship and the adoption of cleaner energy solutions. The widespread integration of biofuels is essential for a more sustainable future in global trade.
