Dutch shipbuilding company Damen Shipyards Group has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with tug and workboat company Herman Sr. to build a new multi-purpose vessel (MPV) 4916.

The MPV 4916 is set to be the first in a series that aims to merge the strengths of Damen’s Shoalbuster and Multi Cat series vessels.

The construction of the MPV 4916 is scheduled to begin early next year at Albwardy Damen’s shipyard in Sharjah, Middle East, with delivery expected in 2027.

The vessel’s design allows for various positioning methods, including spud poles, four-point mooring, DP2, and beaching, ensuring stability in both shallow and deep waters.

The vessel’s 16m beam provides a stable platform for a wide range of equipment supported by its spacious deck.

Designed to handle complex operations, the vessel is equipped with a hydraulic A-frame and two knuckle boom cranes, an aft crane with an active heave compensated winch. It can accommodate up to 34 persons.

The vessel features SPS code accreditation and full MLC2006 compliance ensuring safety. It also has COMF-3 notation for its low noise and vibration levels.

Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld commercial manager Leon Fijnekam said: “It is a pleasure to be cooperating once again with Herman Sr. Our two companies have a long history of fruitful collaboration and we’re excited to be embarking on this latest adventure together.”

The MPV 4916’s flexibility allows it to perform various tasks, from cargo transportation to maintenance duties in the offshore energy sectors.

It supports diving operations, pipeline work, and cable maintenance and repair. With its 14m carousel, it can lay cables in areas inaccessible to larger vessels and even connect cables to shore through beaching.

Initially powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, the vessel is prepared for future conversion to full electric propulsion and can be adapted for dual-fuel methanol engines as the technology matures.

The vessel also features a Damen Marine NOX Reduction System for IMO Tier III compliance.

Herman Sr. commercial manager Erwin van Dodewaard said: “As family businesses, we hold a long-term view, taking care that what we do today will be of benefit to the future generations.

“A vessel such as this MPV 4916 aligns well with this goal, with its adaptable, versatile profile and its environmentally progressive performance.”

Recently, Damen Shipyards Galati initiated the construction of the first two out of four fully electric ferries for BC Ferries, the Canadian ferry operator.
