COSCO orders twelve dual-fuel methanol container vessels

COSCO SHIPPING has announced the order of twelve new 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel, efficient container vessels.

According to the company, these vessels, designed for enhanced environmental performance, are being developed through a collaboration between COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, and the China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute.

The vessels will have the following specifications:

  • Length: 335.9 meters
  • Width: 51 meters
  • Equipped with an invisible bulb bow and stern energy-saving device
  • Designed with high capacity for reefer containers
  • Dual-fuel methanol engines and generators
  • Permanent magnet shaft generator
  • Bow wind deflector
  • Air lubrication system for the hull
  • Intelligent systems compliant with the third phase of EEDI energy efficiency indicators and the latest cybersecurity regulations

The announcement was marked by a signing ceremony attended by Sun Yunfei, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING Group, and representatives from various divisions within the organization.

In addition to these new vessels, COSCO SHIPPING Holdings has ordered twelve 24,000 TEU container ships with methanol dual-fuel propulsion and has contracts for converting eight existing ships to methanol dual-fuel propulsion. The company is also pursuing initiatives in all-electric ship operations and biofuel pilot projects.

Furthermore, COSCO Shipping Development has announced its largest shipbuilding and leasing agreement since becoming a shipping finance operator in 2016. The deal includes the construction and leasing of 42 bulk carriers.
