Construction Begins on Sirius-Gasum LNG Bunkering Vessel | Mariner News

Trust Score: 96

Construction has officially commenced on the innovative Sirius-Gasum LNG bunkering vessel, named Celsius. This significant project, a joint venture between Swedish shipping company Sirius Shipping and Gasum, aims to bolster the supply of cleaner marine fuel. The steel-cutting ceremony at RMK Marine in Istanbul marks a pivotal step towards enhancing LNG bunkering infrastructure in Northwestern Europe. The vessel is slated for delivery in 2027 and will be operated by Gasum to meet the growing demand for liquefied natural gas and bio-LNG.

Innovative Design for Efficient Fueling

The Celsius, a 7,500 m3 capacity LNG bunkering vessel, stands out with its advanced features. Notably, it will incorporate a gas combustion unit to facilitate cool-downs and gassing up operations, distinguishing it from other LNG bunker vessels. This design ensures efficient and safe transfer of marine fuel, supporting the maritime industry’s transition to more sustainable energy solutions.

Supporting the Expanding LNG-Fueled Fleet

The global LNG-fueled fleet is experiencing rapid expansion, driving a corresponding need for robust bunkering infrastructure. With 846 vessels already in operation and an additional 552 expected by 2028, the demand for LNG bunker fuel is set to surge. This new LNG bunkering vessel from Sirius and Gasum is strategically positioned to cater to this increasing requirement, ensuring reliable access to cleaner marine fuel for ships adopting gas power. This initiative underscores the commitment to greener shipping practices.
