Chinese Bulker Issues Distress Signal, Urgent Alert | Mariner News
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has issued an urgent maritime alert after receiving a distress signal from the Chinese bulker, Xing Guang 11, on January 30. Contact with the Panama-registered dry bulk carrier, owned by a Chinese company, was reportedly lost in waters near Eastern Samar. This critical shipping incident has prompted a widespread lookout request to all nearby vessels.
Urgent Lookout for Distressed Vessel
The PCG’s alert specifically requested all ships transiting the Eastern Samar region to keep a sharp lookout for the distressed vessel. They were instructed to promptly report any sightings or pertinent information to the nearest Coast Guard office or radio station. Details regarding the exact nature of the distress or the number of crew members aboard the Xing Guang 11 remain scarce, escalating the urgency of the situation for maritime authorities and the shipping community.
Vessel Background and Safety Checks
The 18,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) bulker, built in 2008, was on a voyage from Nakhodka, Russia, to Bahudopi, Indonesia, a significant nickel mining hub. Its last known position placed it approximately 54 nautical miles east-northeast of Siluan Island. Interestingly, a Port State inspection in Vietnam last November had identified deficiencies related to the operational readiness of its lifesaving appliances, though the vessel was permitted to continue its journey. Search and rescue efforts are now underway for the cargo ship.
