Chemship Expands Wind Propulsion Fleet with Econowind VentoFoils | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Chemship, a leading chemical tanker operator, has placed significant additional orders for Econowind’s innovative wind propulsion system, VentoFoils, for two more of its vessels. This strategic move follows remarkable success with the initial installation, underscoring a strong commitment to maritime sustainability and operational efficiency within the chemical tanker segment. The proven fuel savings from the first deployment have solidified Chemship’s confidence in wind-assisted ship propulsion technology.

Driving Sustainable Shipping Forward

The new installations are slated for the second half of 2026, equipping the Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter with four 16-meter ATEX-certified VentoFoils each. This expansion builds on the groundbreaking retrofit of the Chemical Challenger in early 2024, which positioned it as the pioneering chemical tanker to utilize such advanced wind power technology. Chemship CEO Niels Grotz confirmed that the VentoFoils, combined with their fuel optimization software, have achieved impressive fuel use reductions of up to 15%. This demonstrates substantial progress in shipping decarbonization.

Industry Confidence in Wind Power

Econowind’s Chief Commercial Officer, Chiel de Leeuw, highlighted that this repeat order from Chemship signifies growing industry-wide confidence in wind propulsion solutions. Chemship continues to show leadership by embracing and proving the potential of eco-friendly maritime technology. Their proactive approach sets a precedent for other operators in the tanker sector seeking to enhance their environmental performance and achieve significant energy savings. This commitment to green shipping helps pave the way for a more sustainable future in global logistics.
