Carbon Ridge and Scorpio Tankers deploy centrifugal carbon capture

Carbon Ridge, in collaboration with Scorpio Tankers, has deployed what it claims to be the shipping industry’s first centrifugal onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) on an LR2 product tanker owned by Scorpio Tankers.

The pilot project commenced in July at Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey aboard the STI SPIGA.

Carbon Ridge’s OCCS technology is designed to be modular, cost-effective, and efficient, while providing enhanced capture efficiency and reducing space requirements by up to 75% in comparison to traditional technologies.

The flexible installation options of the system allow for both vertical and horizontal configurations to suit various vessel designs.

The captured CO2 is compressed, liquefied, and safely stored for the duration of the voyage.

By integrating advanced onboard OCCS technology with a comprehensive logistics solution for captured CO2, Carbon Ridge provides a complete turnkey solution that guarantees full compliance with maritime and regional regulations throughout the entire value chain.

The technology is designed for both retrofitting and seamless integration into new builds. It is scalable, independent of fuel type, and provides ship owners with flexibility to reduce their carbon footprint without major overhauls to propulsion systems.

Carbon Ridge CEO and founder Chase Dwyer said: “Unlike other CCS solutions, which are designed to be deployed on land and then adapted for ocean operation, we have specifically designed and developed this technology for the maritime industry.

“The centrifugal carbon capture system is unlike anything that has been deployed on a vessel before and, offers a cost effective, flexible and modular solution to support the maritime industry in its decarbonisation efforts. Our ambition is to lead the way for CCS in shipping, and we are excited to see the results of this deployment with our partner Scorpio Tankers.”

Carbon Ridge has secured additional funding, led by Katapult Ocean and Alfa8, with contributions from Crosscut Ventures and Berge Bulk.

This investment brings the company’s total funding to more than $20m, bolstering its position as a leader in maritime carbon capture solutions.

Scorpio Tankers chief operating officer Cameron Mackey said: “We’re proud to be part of this pilot project with Carbon Ridge, as they not only represent the leading edge of CCS technology, but they also have the requisite understanding of our industry to develop and implement practical solutions.”
