BEML and HSL sign MoU to develop advanced marine systems

BEML, a public sector enterprise under the Indian Ministry of Defence, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) to advance next-generation marine engineering capabilities.

The collaboration aims to co-create advanced indigenous marine systems, focusing on innovation, indigenous design, manufacturing, and comprehensive lifecycle support, which are essential for supporting maritime operations in both defence and commercial sectors, reported the Business Standard.

The two companies formally exchanged the MoU at BEML’s Delhi office in the presence of Shantanu Roy, chairman and managing director of BEML, and Hemant Khatri, chairman and managing director of HSL, along with senior leadership from both organisations.

Roy was quoted as saying: “This collaboration with HSL marks a defining moment in BEML’s expansion into the marine sector.

“It is a strategic convergence of two national institutions committed to engineering excellence, indigenisation, and strengthening India’s global footprint in maritime innovation.”

Under the agreement, BEML will lead the design and development of specialised systems, leveraging its expertise in platform engineering and structural optimisation.

HSL will focus on accelerating indigenisation initiatives and utilising BEML’s production capabilities, especially in defence and heavy engineering.

The two companies will collaboratively develop essential infrastructure solutions, including low-bed transporters, dredging equipment, high-capacity cranes, and heavy-load handling systems, which are crucial for bolstering shipyard logistics and marine infrastructure.

Khatri said: “This MoU marks a strategic leap toward self-reliance and innovation in marine infrastructure.

“By combining the strengths of HSL and BEML, we are creating a powerful platform to develop next-generation indigenous solutions for shipyard infrastructure and the shipbuilding sector, thereby strengthening India’s maritime capabilities for the future.”
