BAR Technologies’ WindWings receives Bureau Veritas’ Type Approval Design Certificate

BAR Technologies has announced the Bureau Veritas Type Approval Design Certificate (TADC) for its WindWings wind propulsion system.

The approval validates the 37.5m WindWings for scalable integration within fleets and highlights the system’s engineering integrity, performance reliability, and readiness for commercial use.

The Bureau Veritas certification follows a rigorous review, confirming that WindWings meets international standards for structural design, materials, load handling, and control systems.

This endorsement enables shipowners and operators to adopt WindWings on BV-classed vessels by retrofitting existing ships or by incorporating on newbuilds.

Union Maritime is one of the first companies to commit to installing WindWings under BV classification, with plans for multiple vessel integrations.

Bureau Veritas marine chief executive Yannis Calogeras said: “Working with BAR Technologies on the WindWings project has been an exceptional example of what is possible when technical rigour meets innovative ambition.

“This certification reflects not only the integrity of the technology but also our shared commitment to a more sustainable maritime future.”

WindWings features a proprietary three-element rigid wingsail configuration, which provides 2.5 times more lift than traditional single-element designs without the need for spinning rotors or suction fans.

The system’s passive boundary layer control and fail-safe feathering mechanism contribute to average fuel savings of 1.5 tonnes (t) per fuel and 4.7t of CO2 savings.

BAR Technologies’ WindWings has also received a TADC from DNV, making it one of the few wind-assisted propulsion solutions certified by more than one IACS-class society. With further classifications expected, WindWings is set for global deployment.

BAR Technologies CEO John Cooper said: “This latest certification is more than a technical tick box. It’s a rallying point for the industry.

“WindWings is now uniquely positioned to deliver measurable emissions reductions at scale. With Bureau Veritas and DNV certification, we’re enabling owners and operators to transition from intent to action.”

In February this year, BAR Technologies partnered with CM Energy Tech to produce new 20m and 24m WindWings models to address growing market demand.

These models are designed to cater to Handymax bulkers, chemical tankers, and general cargo vessels, building on the success of the existing 37.5m WindWings.
