Babcock’s LGE division to supply ammonia fuel supply system

Babcock’s LGE division has secured the first contract to deliver its innovative ecoFGSS-FLEX ammonia fuel supply system.

Comprising an in-house development by LGE’s expert engineering team, the system enables the utilisation of ammonia as a sustainable propulsion fuel and marking a pivotal step towards decarbonising global shipping.

The ecoFGSS-FLEX system will be installed on four medium gas carriers (MGCs) owned by Trafigura and constructed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) recently approved the use of ammonia dual-fuel systems for the new MGCs.

This endorsement comes after a collaborative development project (JDP) was completed, which focused on the design of ammonia dual-fuel systems for these MGCs.

With the maritime industry responsible for an estimated 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the shift to alternative energy sources is crucial.

LGE’s ecoFGSS-FLEX system supports the International Maritime Organisation’s goals for greenhouse gas emission reduction, offering customers a path to comply with these objectives.

LGE is collaborating with various prominent shipowners to incorporate this technology into new builds and retrofit projects.

Designed to integrate with existing ship systems, the technology adheres to the strictest safety and environmental regulations.

The deployment of the ecoFGSS-FLEX system is set to begin in 2027, with full operational capabilities anticipated by year’s end.
