Austal USA has commenced construction on its fourth U.S. Navy Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessel at its Mobile, Alabama facility, marking another significant milestone for the American shipbuilding industry. This crucial project, part of a substantial contract awarded in September 2023, underscores Austal USA’s pivotal role in enhancing naval transport capabilities for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Boosting Naval Readiness with LCU Vessels

These versatile landing craft utility vessels are indispensable for amphibious assault ships, facilitating the rapid movement of essential vehicles, personnel, and vital cargo between ship and shore in diverse military operations. Their impressive heavy-lift capacity rivals that of several C-17 aircraft, making them critical “connectors” for modern naval logistics and power projection.

Austal USA’s Commitment to On-Time Delivery

Austal USA’s Mobile facility is a hub of active ship manufacturing, with four LCU vessels currently under construction. This robust progress, including the anticipated early 2026 delivery of LCU 1710, demonstrates the company’s commitment to timely project completion. Vice president Harley Combs praised the “dedicated, highly talented workforce” for their efficiency. Beyond the LCU program, Austal USA’s steel assembly line is also busy with Navy Towing, Salvage and Rescue Ships (T-ATS) and Coast Guard Heritage-class Offshore Patrol Cutters, further solidifying its defense industry footprint.
