AST Networks & SAL Navigation collaboration on maritime electronics
Satellite communications provider AST Networks has collaborated with SAL Navigation to improve marine electronics and enhance sea safety. It has now released its first product.
The partnership, first announced in July 2024, aims to deliver innovative solutions for the maritime industry.
The system is tailored to support vessels navigating the Panama Canal by ensuring full compliance with its requirements and improving safety, communication, and efficiency during transits.
AST Networks Solutions general manager Lukasz Latosinski said: “Our partnership with SAL Navigation reflects our shared commitment to innovation and safety at sea, The SAL SPU-100 exemplifies how technology can meet complex regulatory requirements whilst simultaneously improving performance for safety and operators.”
The Panama Canal, a key trade chokepoint, requires specialised navigation and communication equipment for vessel compliance and safety.

The SPU-100 is said to meet these requirements, making it a suitable tool for shipowners and operators using the canal.
Its advanced features enhance situational awareness, minimise risks during complex navigation scenarios, and support crews in making critical decisions.
By integrating communication protocols and fail-safe mechanisms, the SPU-100 facilitates smooth canal transits and contributes to the broader goal of safer operations at sea.
SAL Navigation marketing and communications manager Marte Lundgaard said: “The SPU-100 is a testament to the power of collaboration. By combining AST Networks’ expertise in connectivity with SAL Navigation’s innovation in maritime systems, we are delivering solutions that prioritise safety and operational efficiencies.”
In addition to the SPU-100, both companies are exploring further opportunities to enhance ship-to-shore communications, improve compliance with global maritime regulations, and reduce operational costs for vessel owners and operators.
