Key Logistics of Antarctic Cargo Operations
The Dutch heavy-lift vessel Plantijngracht, chartered by MSC, undertook this year’s cargo resupply mission. Departing Port Hueneme, California, in January, the ship delivered 372 pieces of essential cargo, including dry goods and various supplies. A notable innovation this year was the deployment of a 65-ton floating Modular Causeway System (MCS) for offloading, replacing the traditional ice pier to accommodate the vessel’s size and weight. This complex offloading process, involving Navy Cargo Handling Battalion ONE, took two weeks to complete.
