ACT becomes first in the Middle East to receive PERS certification

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in Jordan, managed by APM Terminals, has officially been awarded the Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO).

This sets a precedent for ACT as the first Middle Eastern port to join the European EcoPorts network, underscoring the company’s goal towards achieving environmental sustainability and operational excellence.

The PERS certification was granted after a thorough assessment of ACT’s environmental policies, risk management, legal compliance, and reporting practices.

The audit also confirmed the terminal’s commitment to maintaining a pristine marine and terrestrial environment and its adherence to international environmental standards.

The certification is the result of ACT’s successful completion of a detailed external audit, during which over 64 pieces of evidence were presented to confirm the terminal’s compliance with ESPO’s environmental management system requirements.

Aqaba Container Terminal CEO Harald Nijhof said: “It is our absolute pride to receive the PERS certification from the European Sea Ports Organisation. It is a milestone that underscores our unwavering commitment at Aqaba Container Terminal to environmental stewardship and operational excellence.

“As the first port in the Middle East to join the EcoPorts network, we reaffirm our responsibility to lead by example in shaping a more sustainable future for our region and beyond with the dedication of our entire team.”

The PERS certification also marks a significant milestone in ACT’s ongoing mission to evolve into a sustainable logistics hub.

This vision encompasses supporting the green economy, adhering to global environmental protocols, and increasing efficiency through environmentally friendly practices across all aspects of its operations.
